General fluid mechanics

have you ever wondered how planes fly?

Do you want to understand the flow around a body or inside a pipe? So probably fluid Dynamics is what you are looking for. This branch of physics studies how particles of fluids (liquids or gases) interact each other in a control volume.

Probably you have listened terms like viscosity, density, Reynolds, or facts like aerodynamic drag, lift or compressible flow. There are a lot of specific terminology that fluids involves, they help us to explain how chaotic particles movements in fact are someway predictable.

External flow

Flow develops freely in space without boundaries. But its movements are affected by a body disposed somewhere.

The typical experience of this is showing flow around a wing or a cylinder. Or design of a wind turbine.

It should not be confused with open channel flow, which involves a large surface of liquid governed by gravity.

Internal flow

The fluid is confined to a close boundary by a surface. The normal cases of study are fluid inside pipes or vessels.

Some cases there are two or more fluids, or only one fluid but it changes its phase so appears another phase. This kind of flow is called multiphase flow and is very difficult to describe with mathematical models.

Fluid Systems

You usually will found combined systems of pipes, vessels, centrifugal pumps, and so. The analysis of these kind of systems are the same as individual little problems of internal flow combined together.

On the other hand, if you have a wind farm with several wind turbines, this is not just an external flow, but a system which will interact with each other as a whole.

‘’The time will come when a spacecraft carrying human beings will leave the earth and set out on a voyage to distant planets – to remote worlds. Today this may seem only an enticing fantasy, but such in fact is not the case. The launching of the first two Soviet Sputniks has already thrown a sturdy bridge from the earth into space, and the way to the stars is open.‘’
